Shell attempting to get a lease to drill in Chukchi Sea/Alaska

ALASKA/Chukchi Sea

The Bureau of Ocean Energy, Management,
Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE)
released a Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for the
Chukchi Sea Oil and Gas Lease Sale 193
They are taking comments Now.

BOEMRE is one organization that covers management AND regulation AND enforcement. Does anybody agree that’s a few too many “jobs” for one organization?  How can they do the job clearly when they are “in charge” of all aspects of the system for the area?  This does not make sense at all. I urge the powers that be (I know you’re out there!) to break this organization up and make this right. This is an unjust situation. This cannot be a fair situation. IT can’t be a honest working system when all aspects of the system are held by one organization. Where are the checks and balances in this scenario?

Comments received on or before the deadline of Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, will be considered by the Secretary of the Interior in determining whether to affirm, modify or cancel Lease Sale 193. The final decision is due to the District Court no later than Oct. 3, 2011.

We can’t afford to even take the chance that this natural water resource and the wildlife that live there will be damaged, and at some point filled with oil and chemicals. Mankind is not as smart as Mother Nature no matter how you slice it. The water we have on this planet that is NOT POLLUTED is becoming less and less. We can’t afford to take the chance. We are past the point of taking a chance like this. Please cognate in on this.

Throwing chemicals into an oil mess in one of the last areas where there is clean water is ridiculous. We need to stop now. WE need to refocus on living holistically on this planet.

No amount of profit or pressure is worth what could happen. The damage, along with everything else that is going on on Earth at this moment, is too great. We MUST protect this area from destruction. WE must preserve the water and wild life there with all we’ve got.

From their site:
“Over a quarter million American citizens wrote the Administration, urging to slow down this freight train before a catastrophic wreck destroys not only America’s Arctic ecosystems but also the people and the culture that depend on them. President Obama and Secretary Salazar still have time to demonstrate to the American public and the world, that there is integrity in D.C. and that Alaska’s Arctic is not just for sale to the highest bidder at any cost, especially  [Shell Oil] that continues to wreck environments in the UK’s North Sea and the Niger Delta.”

*There are probably more organizations. Pleae post links/comments here, if you know of others.
